A complete, practical beginner course that teaches you to plan, build, deploy and analyse surveys with KoboToolbox, the free tool for collecting data on phones, tablets and computers, with real Malawian examples.
This course teaches KoboToolbox from the very beginning, with no previous experience of data collection required. Rather than showing buttons in isolation, each section builds toward practical skills used every day by NGOs, schools, cooperatives, health programmes, researchers and government offices in Malawi and beyond: running household surveys, registering farmers, monitoring projects, mapping water points and replacing slow, error-prone paper forms.
You will learn how to plan a survey, create an account, build forms with the right question types, and make them smart with skip logic, validation, calculations, cascading selects and repeat groups. You will work with XLSForm, build forms in English and Chichewa, and reuse your work through the library and templates. You will test and deploy your form, collect data with the KoboCollect Android app and web forms, and manage a field team safely. Finally you will monitor and validate submissions, export and analyse data, protect respondents' information and complete a full practical project. The course ends with an end of course exam.
